JACKSON, Miss.—Dr. Samuel P. Grissom has joined the staff of Methodist Rehabilitation Center in Jackson as medical director of the hospital’s spinal cord injury program.

Dr. Grissom has served as associate medical director at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in Chester, N.J.

“Dr. Grissom has practiced at some of the most esteemed neurological rehabilitation programs in the country, and is already well recognized by his peer group as a committed and capable physician scientist,” said Mark Adams, chief executive officer of Methodist Rehabilitation Center. “We’re confident that he will help further our quest to be one of the top five neurological rehabilitation programs in the nation.”

“On a national level, Methodist Rehabilitation Center is highly regarded for its traumatic brain injury research,” said Dr. Grissom. “That reputation, coupled with the hospital’s commitment to spinal cord research and care, are what drew me here. It is evident that Methodist is well prepared to support my work in spinal cord injury rehabilitation.”

Dr. Grissom has done extensive research on the treatment of spasticity and its complications. He has also authored and co-authored several articles and abstracts published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is an active member of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; American Medical Association; American Spinal Injury Association; and Association of Academic Physiatrists.

A graduate of Tulane University in New Orleans, Dr. Grissom received his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Fla. and completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He became board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation in 1995 and in spinal cord injury medicine in 1999.

Methodist Rehabilitation Center is one of only 16 hospitals in the country designated as a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research and is only one of two in the state accepted into the prestigious Council of Teaching Hospitals. It is also the only hospital in the state to be named one of America’s best by U.S. News and World Report.
